Iris, Goddess of the Rainbow

Iris is goddess of the rainbow and a messenger of the gods. She is often carrying messages for Hera. She was the daughter of Thaumas and Electra, one of the Oceanids and not the daughter of Agamemnon. Her sisters were the fearful harpies. She had no cult following and no temples dedicated to her. In some legends she is the mother of Eros by Sephyrus.

"The goddess took her dark veil, than which there can be no robe more sombre, and went forth with fleet Iris leading the way before her." (Iliad, Book XXIV)

This is my Iris of the Rainbow.

Her head, torso, arms from the elbow down and feet are entirely handsculpted (no molds used, ever) so there will never be another quite like her again.

Iris is shown seated, but in a standing position she is approx. 15" tall from the top of her head to the ends of her skirts. Her body is a wrapped wire armature which allows her to be very gently posed.

She wears a crown of leaves and flowers (this is removeable), and her wings are created from hand dyed silk and wired so that they are poseable. she holds a gazing star in one hand, and in the other a sceptre (this is not removable) adorned with a blue glass gem.

Her mysterious face is handpainted with a blush of artist pigments, colors that I mix myself. Her gown is created of assorted silks, vintage and antique laces, brocades and ribbon that I've collected over the years and continually search out for my dolls.

Iris's eyes are semi-precious hematite beads, and her wild black hair is created from mohair and applied a plait at a time.

She will come beautifully giftwrapped, and have a certificate signed by the artist.
